Some leaders are born and some are created along with the process of nurturing. Being a boss is easy but being a leader, or a people person is one of the hardest virtues to tap into. Although, we believe that becoming a leader is a continuous process of thought and personality building. So what makes you a good leader? Nurturing is the key.

Leadership quality is one of the most desired qualities when it comes to leading a team or a skilled resource of an organization. An efficient management team is an outcome of a skilled leader who drives their team to do the best of all. So, how can coaching nurture a leader in this throat-cutting competitive global market?

As Nelson Mandela said, “A leader is like a Shepherd who stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind”.

Leaders don’t act like an authority but like an accomplice who lets the best man do a certain job by using their expertise and skills. Also, being a leader is not about “celebrating kindness and having a party together” but about fighting for their subordinates and their rights.

So, the right coaching can convert you from an authoritarian to a good leader.

Let’s find out what makes you a leader:

Good Communication is the Key:

We all have been hearing since childhood that “Communication is the key”. This is not just a saying. To understand and to make others understand better, we need to be clear and vocal and here comes the communication in effect. Effective communication dismantles the roadblocks and provides better solutions to any problem. If your subordinate is struggling then better communication can lead to a “happy ending” so inculcate the characteristics of a good orator and a communicator. Better coaching helps you to find the best possible way to overcome such “unheard, unspoken and unaddressed” situations.

Be an Observant:

Having the ability to observe people and situations can save you from various unwelcome clashes and disagreements. Also, observing a project or work progress can reduce the possibility of failures or setbacks. So be vigilant and observant. Nurturing observational skills not only will help you professionally but personally too.

Creative Thinker:

A leader is expected to be a “think box” of the organization. Leaders need to be scriptwriters of the group that help others to develop the best plan or story that aligns with the organization’s objective and vision. Creativity is the one characteristic that can take you ahead of others. Don’t just depend upon juniors instead, you should be the example as a mentor for your juniors. Remember, respect is earned and that makes you a leader from a boss. Keep your creative eyes open 24*7 so you can roll action anytime and encourage your team. Creativity lies in everyone so all you need to do is dig in a little more to nurture your leadership qualities.

Team Builder:

Collect your team like you are collecting gems for the best of your art piece. Keep them aligned with your goal and work tirelessly with the team to attain it. Don’t sit on the extravagant chair instead sit with your team to know the nitty-gritty of each’s performance. People perform better when they are trusted well, so give them enough trust to spread their wings. You are not a leader if you do not lead a team well so build a team that stands with you and for you.

EQ should be Greater than IQ:

No matter how grand your degrees are and how high your IQ is, if you lack emotional intelligence, you are far from being a leader. Try to imbibe the virtues that strengthen your emotional intelligence, it will take you the extra mile. Understanding your team, building a rapport and standing with them in thick and thin is the sign of your high emotional intelligence. Where you need a needle, don’t use a sword, and try to be a little more attentive to the people around you because stored emotions can either make it break your team. Let the emotions speak so there will be an open, healthy and positive environment around you and your team.

Decision Taker:

A leader is expected to make a decision that helps the organization and team to score brownie points. Start with making small decisions within the team that serve better any specific project or goal. Find the best skills to carry out different tasks by recognizing their abilities and efficiency. Good coaching can help you to find the best performers for specific tasks regardless of a better-looking resume or good grades. A perfect resource for an organization is someone who brings the best results and identifying them makes you a good leader. Good coaching can also help your team members to become better team leads in the future.

Inculcate the 5 R’s:

A leader should know the strengths and weaknesses of her/his people and work on the 5 R’s based on the immense possibilities of future profits. These 5 R’s are reason, responsibility, recognition, relationship, and reward. Identify how your subordinates can work based on their skill set to deliver the best outcomes.

These are a few steps that help someone to become a good leader.
